Power BI is Microsoft's business intelligence tool. Odoo has its own reporting and dashboards, but organisations standardised on Power BI often want Odoo data inside their existing reporting environment.
Integrating Power BI with Odoo is about getting Odoo data to Power BI reliably and in a shape it can model, so finance, sales and operations dashboards draw on live business data.
Data Flow
What Data Moves Between Power BI and Odoo
There are two common approaches.
Through the Odoo API: Power BI reads data using Odoo's external API. Odoo exposes XML-RPC and JSON-RPC rather than a REST API, so the connection is built accordingly.
Through a reporting replica: a read-only database replica is queried directly, which suits heavy reporting without loading the live system.
What Goes Wrong
Common Pitfalls
No native REST API. Odoo exposes XML-RPC and JSON-RPC, so a connector must be built for that, not assumed to be REST.
Live database load. Querying the production database directly for heavy reports can slow the system. A replica is safer.
Data modelling. Odoo's schema is normalised, so Power BI needs a deliberate model rather than raw tables.
Refresh strategy. Decide how often dashboards refresh and the cost of that.
Access control. Reporting access must not bypass the data rules that apply inside Odoo.

How the Integration Is Set Up
Choose the approach: the Odoo API or a reporting replica.
Provision access, and a replica if used.
