Mailchimp is an email marketing platform built around audiences and campaigns. Odoo has its own Email Marketing app, so the integration is for teams that prefer to keep campaigns in Mailchimp.
The value of the integration is a single, current contact base. Customers and leads created in Odoo reach the Mailchimp audience, and subscribe or unsubscribe changes flow back, so marketing is not working from a stale export.
Data Flow
What Data Moves Between Mailchimp and Odoo
The integration uses the Mailchimp Marketing API.
Odoo to Mailchimp: contacts and leads added to the relevant audience, with the tags or fields that drive segmentation.
Mailchimp to Odoo: subscribe, unsubscribe and bounce status, and optionally campaign engagement.
What Goes Wrong
Common Pitfalls
Consent and unsubscribe. Unsubscribe status must flow back to Odoo so a contact is not re-added against their wishes.
Audience structure. Mailchimp audiences and Odoo contact filters must be mapped deliberately.
Merge fields. Mailchimp merge fields used in campaigns must map to Odoo fields.
Duplicates. Email is the key, and contacts without one cannot sync.
API limits. Large audiences must be synced in batches.
