Overview

What PayPal Does and Why Connect It

PayPal is a widely recognised payment option that many shoppers prefer at checkout. Odoo ships PayPal as a native payment provider.

Integrating PayPal is mostly enabling and configuring the provider correctly, then making sure PayPal transactions and fees reconcile in Odoo Accounting rather than living only in the PayPal account.

Data Flow

What Data Moves Between PayPal and Odoo

The native provider uses the PayPal API and instant notifications.

  • Odoo to PayPal: payment requests for orders and invoices.
  • PayPal to Odoo: payment confirmations, refunds and reversals.
  • Reconciliation: PayPal balances and fees mapped to Accounting.
What Goes Wrong

Common Pitfalls

  • Notification setup. PayPal payment notifications must be configured or Odoo will not confirm payments automatically.
  • Currency conversion. Cross-currency payments add conversion fees that must be accounted for.
  • Holds on new accounts. PayPal may hold funds on new or high-volume accounts, which delays payouts.
  • Disputes. PayPal dispute resolution needs a path to record reversed amounts.
  • Account type. A business account with the right API permissions is required.
Setup

How the Integration Is Set Up

  1. Confirm a PayPal business account with API access.
  2. Enable the PayPal provider in Odoo with the API credentials.
  3. Configure payment notifications so confirmations reach Odoo.
  4. Map PayPal fees and balances to Accounting.
  5. Test payment and refund flows.
  6. Go live and reconcile the first transactions.
