Xero is a cloud accounting platform popular with small businesses and their accountants. As with any accounting tool, Odoo can replace it outright, since Odoo has its own accounting.
A Xero integration is for the coexistence case: operations and stock run in Odoo, while the accountant continues to work in Xero. The integration keeps the two ledgers consistent without manual re-keying.
Data Flow
What Data Moves Between Xero and Odoo
The integration uses the Xero API with OAuth 2 authentication.
Odoo to Xero: sales invoices, supplier bills, payments and contacts.
Xero to Odoo: optionally the chart of accounts and reconciled payment status.
What Goes Wrong
Common Pitfalls
Two ledgers. Decide which system owns each record type to avoid drift.
Account and tax mapping. Xero accounts and tax rates must map cleanly to Odoo.
Contact matching. Customers and suppliers need a matching rule to avoid duplicates.
Token refresh. Xero OAuth tokens expire and the integration must refresh them.
Tracking categories. Xero tracking categories may need mapping to Odoo analytic accounts.
Setup
How the Integration Is Set Up
Agree which system is authoritative for each record type.
