Overview

What Shopify Does and Why Connect It

Shopify is a hosted commerce platform that runs the storefront, checkout and payment capture. It is strong at selling, but it is not a back office. It does not run your purchasing, your warehouse, your manufacturing or your books.

Integrating Shopify with Odoo keeps Shopify as the shop window and makes Odoo the system of record. The catalogue and stock are managed once in Odoo, orders flow back from Shopify, and finance sees a single ledger instead of reconciling a storefront against a spreadsheet.

Data Flow

What Data Moves Between Shopify and Odoo

The connection uses the Shopify Admin REST and GraphQL APIs, with webhooks for near real-time events.

  • Odoo to Shopify: products, variants, prices, descriptions, images and available stock quantities.
  • Shopify to Odoo: orders, customers, paid amounts, discounts, shipping and tax lines, refunds and cancellations.
  • Two-way: inventory levels, so a sale on either side decrements the shared quantity.

Orders arrive in Odoo as sale orders and become invoices, so revenue, tax and payouts reconcile in Accounting.

What Goes Wrong

Common Pitfalls

  • SKU mismatch. If a Shopify variant SKU does not match an Odoo product, the order line cannot map. SKUs must be the shared key before the first sync.
  • Inventory race conditions. When the same product sells on Shopify and another channel at once, the sync window decides who oversells. Decide which system owns stock.
  • Variant model differences. Shopify variants and Odoo product variants are structured differently and need a deliberate mapping.
  • Tax mapping. Shopify tax lines must map to Odoo tax codes or invoices will not reconcile.
  • API rate limits. Shopify throttles the API, so a large catalogue sync must be paced and queued.
Setup

How the Integration Is Set Up

  1. Create a custom app in Shopify and generate Admin API credentials with the required scopes.
  2. Agree the field mapping: SKU as the product key, tax mapping, customer matching, order statuses.
  3. Run an initial catalogue and inventory sync, then verify a sample against Shopify.
  4. Register webhooks for orders, refunds and inventory so events arrive in near real time.
  5. Confirm the order-to-invoice workflow and payout reconciliation in Accounting.
  6. Schedule a periodic batch reconciliation to catch any missed webhook.
