How Odoo ERP fits non-profits and NGOs: donations, grants, fund accounting and donor management.
Non-profits and NGOs are accountable in a way businesses are not. Money arrives restricted to purposes, must be spent and reported against those purposes, and donors and funders expect transparency. Odoo can run a non-profit, but fund accountability has to be designed in.
The pain is restricted funds and reporting. A grant for one programme cannot pay for another, donations carry donor intent, and funders require reports in their own formats. General accounting does not enforce this on its own.
Odoo's analytic accounting is the tool for fund accountability. Each fund, grant or programme becomes an analytic account, and every income and expense line is tagged to it, so spend against restricted funds is tracked and reportable. CRM and Contacts manage donors, and the membership tools manage members where the organisation has them.
The configuration centre is the analytic structure for funds and the reporting built on it. Donation receipts, often with tax-deduction requirements, must be set up correctly. Where the organisation operates across countries, multi-currency and consolidated reporting need design.
